In this week’s Village Expert Spotlight, we chatted with Chelsea Skaggs, owner and lead coach at Postpartum Together. As a life and relationship coach, Chelsea helps couples stay connected through the challenges of early parenthood. She combines professional expertise with her lived experience to guide couples in building homes where kids see parents who truly love and respect each other.
Name and occupation:
Chelsea Skaggs, Owner/Lead Coach at Postpartum Together
Do you have kids? If so, how old are they?
Yes: 7 and 9.
Tell us about your company/current role:
Postpartum Together exists to keep the “together” in the partnership and teamwork that comes with having a baby. As a coach I provide proactive guidance and strategies to support a couple’s goals for themselves, their relationship, and what it means to build a strong family foundation.
Go-to coffee (or tea) order:
Matcha (lavender or strawberry) with oat milk or coconut milk. (Damn digestive issues).
Any family traditions?
We’re looking forward to winter for slumber parties on the living room floor with the fireplace. We enjoy a camping trip in upper Michigan every year with friends. Our family is heavy on community so I’d also say hosting monthly game nights with our friends!
3 things you never leave the house without:
Phone, chapstick, water bottle.
Piece of parenting advice that has stuck with you:
Figure out how you want your kids to describe you and your relationship with them as adults and block out the things that don’t support that but feel like external pressure.
What does your support system look like?
We are fortunate to have family nearby (we wouldn’t choose Ohio if not for that probably!) but they are definitely part of our support system. Our parents, and also both of my sisters—one who has kids and one who is childless by choice and able to spoil them with fun! Also our friends’ group chat is always a place to turn for “can our kid hang with yours for a few hours” or “can you do pick up if I do drop off” requests.
Last thing you did solely for yourself:
Trained for a half marathon. The mental consistency and dedication has really grown me this time!
If you had a magic wand to make one parenting challenge disappear, what would it be?
ALL THE PRESSURE AND INPUT! If I had a magic wand, I’d make the pressure to do it all perfectly disappear. The guilt, the second-guessing, the feeling that you’re falling short no matter what you do. I’d replace it with confidence for parents trusting that good enough really is good enough, and that your presence matters more than perfection ever could and that learning to do that on the same team makes a huge difference .
